Parenting support

Involving parents in their children's education can help remove barriers to learning, raise attainment and improve attitudes and behavior

Parenting support aims to equip parents and carers with the skills to support their child's education and to deal effectively with issues that could affect the well-being of the family. Schools will need to provide:

  • local services, tailored to the needs of those parents who stand to benefit most from support
  • transition information sessions for parents whose children are joining a reception class or transferring to secondary school
  • details of local and national sources of advice and support
  • access to parenting groups that use structured, evidence-based parenting programs
  • access to informal networking opportunities such as coffee mornings and cookery or ICT classes, and
  • Family learning sessions (depending on demand)

North Yorkshire Family Information website: www.nyfamilies.info

The North Yorkshire Family Information website is a source of information for both families and practitioners working with children and young people. It has information on:

  1. The Families Information Service who provide free, impartial information, advice and guidance on Childcare, Early Years Education and other Children's Services in North Yorkshire. Who can the Families Information Service help?
    • parents - mothers, fathers and carers
    • people wanting to set up childcare services
    • people wishing to work in the childcare/play work sector
    • existing childcare providers
  2. The Children's Services Directory for North Yorkshire provides information and help for children, families, young people, parents, carers and the professionals who work with them.
Here you will find organisation details, advice and links that cover a wide range of issues that affect families, children and young people. You will also find information on events and activities across North Yorkshire.
  3. Children's centres
Sure Start children's centres are intended to be the focal point for early years services and by 2010, every family with children up to the age of 5 will have access to a range of services through a Sure Start children's centre.
    Ring the help-line on 0845 6011630
  4. Extended Services in or through schools
Schools which offer Extended Services are places where the whole school community can enjoy learning, access services and feel welcome. The vision is of schools at the heart of the community offering a range of locally determined activities and services. There is no single model for extended schools - what is on offer is shaped by the needs and demands of pupils, parents and the wider community. Many schools are already providing access to extended services, but we want all schools to do this so that all children, young people and families can benefit, wherever they live.
